National Vietnam War Veterans Day March 29

National Vietnam War Veterans Day March 29, 1973:

Today - March 29th is National Vietnam War Veterans Day, marking the day U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, disestablished on March 29, 1973.

Caroline and I stopped by the Vietnam Memorial at Willis and Court Street over the weekend and cleaned-up the area. This is the 4th year of Vietnam Veterans Day – I think in the future we ought to hold a small ceremony at the memorial like we do for Memorial Day, Veterans Day and over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

This year, for Woman's History Month and National Vietnam War Veterans Day, I wrote a story about Barbara Robbins. Robbins is something of a legend - in a hushed tone of voice - in the agency. I have always found this story so haunting and sad: Barbara Robbins was the first female killed in the line of duty in Vietnam. Please find the story here: https://www.baltimoresun.com/maryland/carroll/lifestyles/cc-lt-dayhoff-032121-20210319-zsdd6doivjadbi275p234jsqyy-story.html

Mission BBQ opened today in Westminster

Mission BBQ opened today in Westminster where Friendly's Restaurant used to be located at 584 Jermor Way

Friendly's had closed at that location on Nov. 27, 2018. According to an article in the Carroll County Times on Nov. 28, 2018, "The company that was founded in 1935 the middle of the Great Depression in Springfield, Massachusetts, and would become Friendly Ice Cream Corp. filed for bankruptcy in 2011, according to the Wall Street Journal.."

It was a great day. At 12-noon, Westminster Police Officer Terrence McGowan sang the National Anthem as fire equipment surrounded the restaurant and Westminster Fire Department Tower 3 flew the American Flag.

Vietnam vets were treated to sandwich. Mission BBQ chose to open today - March 29th on National Vietnam War Veterans Day, marking the day U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, disestablished on March 29, 1973.

Carole King - Out in the Cold (Official Audio)

"Out In the Cold", a single recorded during the 'Tapestry ' sessions that ultimately did not make it onto the album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8QqSvYT3SY

https://www.facebook.com/kevindayhoff/posts/10221916446753878

Tapestry topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971, and remained on the charts for more than six years – featuring such songs as "It's Too Late" and "I Feel the Earth Move"

Of course, as a writer, I was immediately drawn to singer-songwriter music. Music performed by artists who tell stories by writing and performing their own material.

Tapestry reminded me of Southern Gothic literature. An article by David Browne in Rolling Stone published February 10, 2021 explained, “Similarly, the narrator of “It’s Too Late” is almost matter of fact when surveying the end of a relationship; she sounds rational, not distraught. For the 50th anniversary, an album outtake, “Out in the Cold,” has been resurrected after first appearing as a bonus track on a 1999 CD reissue. A confessional about being unfaithful to a lover and paying the price, it feels rational and adult (if not totally empowered)…” (‘Tapestry’ at 50: Why Carole King’s Masterpiece Still Challenges Us - With its masterful songcraft and backstory of personal reinvention, King’s 1971 landmark remains one of pop’s greatest declarations of independence…)

Some of the best examples singer-songwriters include artists such as Bob Dylan, "Mixed-Up Confusion" (1962); Paul McCartney, "Love Me Do"/"P.S. I Love You" (1962); John Lennon, Chuck Berry, Joni Mitchell, “Urge for Going”); and Carole King, "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" (1960.)

However I first became enthralled with the genre as a result of the release of Carole King’s “Tapestry.

"Out In The Cold"

I only wanted to play

I thought what he didn't know

Wouldn't hurt him anyway

But he found out and

Someone else gave him her hand to hold

And suddenly I find myself out in the cold

He trusted me all the time

I thought I could see another man

And he would still be mine

Well yesterday I had a good thing

Worth more than gold

Today he's got a truer love and I'm out in the cold

I had a love warmer than fire

But I listened to my desire

Now yesterday's dreams are tomorrow's heartache

I'm paying, paying for my mistake

Now, girl, take a tip from one who knows

If you open up a new door

You may find the old one's closed

So be true to your good man

Take a lesson from this story I have told

Or you just might get left now

Out in the cold

You just might get left now

Out in the cold

Don't let yourself get left now

Out in the cold

Don't let yourself get left now

Out in the cold

Carole King - It's Too Late (Official Lyric Video)

Lyrics:
And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it
Oh no no no no (no no, no no)

The snow is just starting to stick to the roads

The snow is just starting to stick to the roads and get slippery. Might be a good time to stay at home and enjoy some time with your family until the storm passes, and the Westminster Street Department and the county and state roads department gets the roadways cleared. Stay safe. Wed. 10:30 PM Feb. 10, 2021

Copyright © 2019 by Raz Nitzan Music (RNM) LYRICS Sometimes I wish this struggle wasn’t mine‘ Cause God it feels so lonely I almost find the northernmost point I almost find you there What does this mean to step on every crack And never make it home I almost find the northernmost point I almost find me there [Chorus] If you wanna hear the lion’s roar You got to crawl through Alice’s door You may have feet of clay But you are on your way for sure If you wanna hear the lion’s roar You got to crawl through Alice’s door You may have feet of clay But you are on your way... The darkness tries to be an honest friend to me It sings through me you will see Your way up to the northernmost point Your way up through your fear [Chorus] I know that you are lost today... But you are on your way

Celebrating the legacy of the “Six Nations” – the Haudenosaunee Confederation pre-colonial government in Carroll County

A Historical Society of Carroll County 184th County Birthday presentation by local historian and writer Kevin Dayhoff on January 23, 2021 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Every year the Historical Society of Carroll Co. hosts a celebration of our county’s birthday in mid-January.

Out of respect for the safety protocols for the Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020, this year, the 184th anniversary is celebrated live by way of Zoom. Registration is required to access the program. Registration is available at https://hsccmd.org/event/virtual-carroll-county-birthday/

Before 1744, the predominant government in Carroll County was the Haudenosaunee Nation — the “Six Nations.” The Haudenosaunee played a key role in the evolution of American democracy.

“Much of our current way of life is owed to the heritage and legacy of the Haudenosaunee Nation. Several main roads in Carroll County have their beginnings as Haudenosaunee trading routes. And several towns in Carroll County — Patapsco for example — had their beginnings as Haudenosaunee settlements.

It is interesting to note that the Haudenosaunee were a matriarchal society – that is a society that is run by women. Women owned all of the property in the long house. They were also in charge of the farming operations. As a matter of fact - Iroquois men moved into the house of his wife’s family after they got married.

The Algonquians arrived around 800 B.C. The original Algonquians divided into a number of distinct tribe-nations, which formed a multi-nation government under a constitution that dates to approximately Aug. 31, 1142.

The Algonquians called themselves the “Haudenosaunee” meaning “People of the Longhouse” and their government was one of the first true participatory democracies in history. It also incorporated full political and leadership rights for women.

“It was not until after the Treaty of the Six Nations was signed on July 4, 1744, with the Haudenosaunee Nation, and the dispute over the Mason-Dixon Line was settled in 1767 that settlers started to come to Carroll County in greater numbers…

Lessons From a Tourism Pushback in Hawaii – Skift

https://skift.com/2021/01/07/lessons-from-a-tourism-pushback-in-hawaii/

Fascinating discussion about post-COVID-19 tourism... FTA: Maui resident comments range from "[a]ll of Hawaii needs to get rid of tourism and go more into agriculture" to suggestions on controlling the amount of rental car availability.

Kauai's survey results express disappointment in the proposed destination plan's failure "to acknowledge the core problem (overtourism)" and that "the Steering Committee is deluding itself if it believes that Kauai residents' tourism-related concerns and hostility are primarily due to insensitive tourists, rather than the direct result of there being too many tourists."

A shout out to those working the long Thanksgiving holiday.

A shout out to those working the long Thanksgiving holiday. Please keep in your prayers, our men and women in uniform, our police officers, firefighters, emergency dispatchers and EMS providers; who will all through the holiday in harm's way, giving us an opportunity to have a safe holiday.

As we gather with our families over the holidays, may we ask that we be given patience, resolve, and wisdom in all that lies ahead for our great nation? At a time like this in our nation's history, I am reminded that Thomas Jefferson once advised, "I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend."

On this Thanksgiving weekend be ever thankful that we can laugh, enjoy our families, revel in our freedoms, celebrate our great community, and be stronger because of our differences.
