The New Yorker Oct. 22, 1990: “But that’s what being an artist is – feeling crummy before everyone else feels crummy.”

The New Yorker Oct. 22, 1990: “But that’s what being an artist is – feeling crummy before everyone else feels crummy.”

This cartoon was pinned to my desk for many-many years and it never ceased to make me smile – for many different reasons at different times in my life.

First of all, I just thought the overly-emotional artist in the piece was so pretentious that it made me laugh. Oh, to think of how many artists I have known over the years that sincerely though that the sun and the universe revolved around them and their every whim feeling, and desire.

Secondly, the context of the artist’s studio frequently reminded me of my artist’s and writer’s workshop on the farm before Caroline saved me and dragged me kicking and screaming to safety.

I hope that none of my artist and writer friends have a “crummy” holiday. And if you do, get over your bad self and roll-up your sleeves and go out there and act on your feelings by making a difference. Just saying.

I hope that my artist and writer friends and colleagues out there have a Happy Hanukkah, and a Merry Christmas and a great holiday season.

Now where did I put that bottle of ibuprofen? Where’s my coffee? I need more peanut butter. Am I out of jelly again? Oh, another rejection letter for my collection? Darn it; I liked that short story. What do you mean you did not like my use of semi-colons? Semi-colons are my friends. What do you mean the dead character was clumsy and the plot did not pass the suspension of disbelief? Just sit on it – it’s a good story. Where is my dejected ‘rejection’ file? Whatever.

The Historical Society of Carroll County Announces the Reprinting of - The Forgotten Corner: A History of Oakland Mill by Diana Scott

Just in time for Christmas

October 26, 2015

Related: http://carrollhistory.org/the-forgotten-corner-the-history-of-oakland-mills/ Enjoy Diana Scott’s 2014 presentation when she spoke in Sykesville about her new book The Forgotten Corner: A History of Oakland Mills.

Westminster, MD - The Historical Society of Carroll County is pleased to announce that The Forgotten Corner: A History of Oakland Mill by Diana Scott - one of its best-selling titles - is now available again.

The book has been out of print for several years but now, thanks to a generous donation by Diana and her husband, Charles, the book is being updated and re-printed.

Based on years of research, the book tells the fascinating story of a Carroll County community lost to the waters of Liberty Reservoir. From early settlement to the growth of a textile mill on the bank of the Patapsco River, it examines the lives of those who worked in and around the Oakland Manufacturing Company.

Oral histories with some of the last residents offer a moving account of life in the town and the experience of watching their community disappear. The new edition includes information not found in the original.

The book will be after available November 11 in the Shop at Cockey’s. The price is $22.00 plus tax. Historical Society members receive a 10% discount. The Shop is located at 216 East Main Street in Westminster. The Shop is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Mrs. Scott presented an illustrated lecture on the history of Oakland Mill at the Historical Society’s Box Lunch Talk on November 11, 2015 at Grace Hall, Grace Lutheran Church, Carroll Street, Westminster.

The Box Lunch Talks begin at noon and last about an hour. Bring your lunch – the Society provides beverages and desserts. Admission is $3.00 for Society members and $7.00 for non-members. Books will be available for purchase.

Hopefully the first of several stories about the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce trip to Cuba in November

Hopefully the first of several stories about the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce trip to Cuba in November - by Kevin E. Dayhoff

Outside of the town of Viñales, a Cuban tobacco processor pauses at the end of the day at a small government-run tobacco processing and sorting facility called a “despalillo de Tabaco.’ The employees – mostly women, sorted and graded tobacco by quality and color for use in the Francisco Donatien factory in Pinar del Rio. Moralists in the 17th century panicked over novels.

Moralists in the 17th century panicked over novels.

They reasoned that women, being somehow unable to distinguish between reality and fiction, would act out of immoral situations they read in novels. (We should all hope.)

Blogger Buzz: HTTPS support coming to Blogspot

This is good news - one step at a time. Now I am looking forward to the 'HTTPS Availability' for custom domains...

Blogger Buzz: HTTPS support coming to Blogspot:

September 30, 2015

http://buzz.blogger.com/2015/09/https-support-coming-to-blogspot.html

"This morning we posted an update about Blogspot to Google’s Security Blog https://googleonlinesecurity.blogspot.com/2015/09/https-support-coming-to-blogspot.html.

Since 2008, we've worked to encrypt the connections between our users and Google servers. Over the years we've announced that Search, Gmail, Drive, and many other products have encrypted connections by default, and most recently, we've made a similar announcement for our ads products.

In this same vein, today we're expanding on the HTTPS Everywhere mission and beginning an initial rollout of HTTPS support for Blogspot. HTTPS is a cornerstone of internet security as it provides several important benefits: it makes it harder for bad actors to steal information or track the activities of blog authors and visitors, it helps check that visitors open the correct website and aren’t being redirected to a malicious location, and it helps detect if a bad actor tries to change any data sent from Blogger to a blog visitor.

While this initial rollout won’t support all of our Blogger users, we wanted to take the first step to make HTTPS available for Blogspot; for those users who want to try it early.

We’re rolling this out gradually and Blogspot authors interested in enabling HTTPS support can begin opting-in today. Simply log into https://www.blogger.com, click on the blog you’d like to make HTTPS enabled, navigate to the Settings page, and select "yes" for "HTTPS Availability".

Unfortunately, blogs with custom domains are not supported in this first version. "
