Ed Hutcheson played by Humphrey Bogart from the movie, “Deadline U.S.A.” 1952. Ed Hutcheson: “That's the press, baby. The press! And there's nothing you can do about it. Nothing!” @kevindayhoff #partylikeajournalist

"È la stampa, bellezza. E tu non ci puoi fare un bel niente!"

Ed Hutcheson: It's not enough anymore to give 'em just news. They want comics, contests, puzzles. They want to know how to bake a cake, win friends, and influence the future. Ergo, horoscopes, tips on the horses, interpretation of dreams so they can win on the numbers lottery. And, if they accidentally stumble on the first page... news!

Jim Cleary: A journalist makes himself the hero of the story. A reporter is only a witness. “Deadline U.S.A.” 1952. #partylikeajournalist

On September 29, 2011, Craig Steves wrote on YouTube, “Bob Greene of the Chicago Tribune has called this the best journalism movie ever made. He is absolutely right.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kn_Y9ZU8hY8

If you are interested in art movies, see Citizen Kane. If you are interested in screwball comedy, check out His Girl Friday. If it's history you're after, watch All the Presidents Men. If you want to see a classic journalism movie, rent one of the multiple versions of The Front Page.

But if you want to see a movie that actually shows you what life is like inside a newsroom, how reporters work together to get a story, and how "the story" is not always about the big expose but sometimes just about getting the little details right, this is your movie.

You can also watch Ron Howard's The Paper, but it's a pale imitation of this movie.

The film brings up, a mere 53 years ago, issues that are relevant today - the tabloids versus real, factual news, and the meaning of a free press. These debates continue today, but unfortunately, it seems that the tabloid type of journalism is winning. As for a free press - our press might be freer than many, but it isn't entirely free. As anyone who lost money in the great savings and loan scandal can tell you, important stories disappear from the front pages all the time.

Bogart's strong performance is the engine that keeps this film going, and there's a nice performance by Kim Hunter as his ex-wife. Deadline USA reminds us of the good old days, when you could believe what you read in the New York Times.”

Credit Cards » Beware Of Currency Conversion Fees

If you do a lot of international traveling, you've probably been stung by an unpleasant surprise lurking at the bottom of your bank statement or credit card bill: a currency conversion fee. While the CARD Act has done plenty to reduce sometimes exorbitant credit card fees, it left currency conversion fees untouched, ensuring travelers will have at least one unpleasant vacation memory.

Consult this chart to see the fees charged by the largest U.S. credit card issuers. http://www.bankrate.com/finance/credit-cards/beware-of-currency-conversion-fees.aspx

Capital One

ATM withdrawal: None for online accounts, $1.50 for some accounts opened in bank branches

Debit card purchase: None

Credit card cash advance: None

Rick Steves’ Europe: Card Fees (and How to Avoid Them)

Travelers returning from Europe often open their mail to discover they paid more for their trip than they thought they had. Over the last decade, banks have dramatically increased their fees for overseas transactions. While these fees are legal, they’re basically a slimy way for credit-card companies to wring a few more dollars out of their customers.

[…]

So, how can a smart traveler avoid — or at least reduce — these fees? Here are a few suggestions.

[…]

If you’re getting a bad deal, get a new card. Some companies offer lower international fees than others — and some don’t charge any at all. If you’re going on a long trip, do some research and consider taking out a card just for international purchases. Capital One has a particularly good reputation for no-fee international transactions on both its credit cards and its debit cards linked to a checking account. Most credit unions have low-to-no international transaction fees. Bankrate has a good comparison chart of major credit cards and their currency-conversion fees.

[…]

Avoid dynamic currency conversion (DCC). Some European merchants — capitalizing on the fact that many Americans are intimidated by unusual currencies — cheerfully charge you for converting their prices to dollars before running your credit card. Sky News: Taylor Swift Trademarks 'This Sick Beat' Lyric

Taylor Swift Trademarks 'This Sick Beat' Lyric: "She has sold millions of albums and her latest songs are being sung by fans around the world, but now Taylor Swift has taken action to ban the unauthorised use of her lyrics.

The Shake It Off singer has trademarked phrases such as "This sick beat" and "Cause we never go out of style" to make sure they do not appear on merchandise.

It has been a busy week for the star after her Twitter and Instagram accounts were hacked on Tuesday.

According to the legal database Justia, the filing prevents the use of phrases from her album 1989 on everything from umbrellas to removable tattoos.

Other lyrics listed include "Party like it's 1989" and "Nice to meet you. Where you been?""

Whether you are a writer, visual artist or a well-known performer; the challenge of defending our intellectual property is constant - read more here: http://news.sky.com/story/1417203/taylor-swift-trademarks-this-sick-beat-lyric

On Friday, February 9, 2007, Dick Hull retired from Carroll Land Services. The creative genius that made Carroll Land Services so successful can still be seen through the lens of his camera.

According to Carroll County Times writer Jacob deNobel, the exhibition started on Thursday, January 22, 2015 and is “running until Feb. 28. The exhibition features photography from the group's 38 members and families, with subjects including nature photography, still-lifes, abstract images and landscapes

Mr. deNobel quotes Mr. Hull to remark, “Richard Hull, a nature photographer from Manchester who will be exhibiting in the show, said he began taking pictures in the mid-'80s when he became involved with underwater photography. When he bought his first digital camera in 2005, he had trouble with the new technology, though soon embraced the tech wholeheartedly.

“‘I’m not a computer guy, so to learn computers and the programs was pretty tough," Hull said. "In my opinion, it really is superior a lot of the time, even though there are people who would hate to hear me say it.’”

ManneqART Announces 2015 Events Schedule

ManneqART Announces 2015 Events Schedule

ManneqART has announced its 2015 Competition which features the following unique and exciting events:

·         March 28-29 Sculpture on the Human Form Workshop for students and beginning artists
·         April 30--Artworks entry deadline
·         June 21 ManneqART Madness--Public introduction of the 2015 artworks
·         September 12-26  Public Display of Artworks
·         September 27 Gala and Stage Show

ManneqART is a 501c3 nonprofit arts and education organization and competition based in Howard County, focused on bringing the Wearable Arts to the public.

Now in its third year, it’s mission is to inspire creativity and reward excellence in the field of wearable art.  ManneqART reaches out to beginning and accomplished artists of all ages and skill levels and invites them to think outside their comfort zones to create artworks unlike anything our community has seen in the past.   A gallery of more than 150 artworks created by ManneqART contestants from 30+ states can be seen at:

Since ManneqART was founded in 2013,  it has become an exciting Howard County arts event and a part of the Columbia Festival of the Arts.  Nearly 200 artworks have been presented to the community,  including over 100 shown at 16 Howard County locations for two weeks in September, 2014.

Last year's entries included artworks from 19 states made of all kinds of materials, from metals and paper, to spray foam and melted plastic bags.   Artist awards totaling $10,000 were presented to artists in several categories.

For 2015,  ManneqART has entered into a Partnership Agreement with the Howard County Public Schools System to train students to create 3-dimension, wearable art.  Studies suggest that arts training might be related to improvements in math or reading skills.

A March 28-29 Workshop will feature accomplished wearable artists teaching students and others  how to work with materials,  structure and colors to create artworks for the 2015 Competition.

ManneqART is unique and growing non-profit but we can't provide these artworks to the Howard County community with the communities support.  We are seeking contributions for the 2015 competition.   and would be grateful for support in many different forms, including artist sponsorships, events support, in-kind contributions, cash donations,  fundraising outreach, volunteers and more.
For more information about entering or supporting the 2015 competition,  go to the ManneqART website at www.manneqart.org, email info@manneqart.org or call 301.725.5555

BACKGROUND:

Lee Andersen, a Kiwi from the North Island of New Zealand, founded ManneqArt in 2013, as an innovative nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization created to promote the arts and the artists.  ManneqART is patterned after New Zealand's 25 year old World of Wearable Art which attracts artists from all over the world and welcomes 50,000 plus visitors each year to Wellington, NZ.   An artist and highly successful "art to wear" fashions designer by trade,  Andersen is also well known for her unique knitted fashions worn by both public and private clients, such as Bill Cosby and Phylicia Rashad.   Some of Andersen's cutting edge designs are on display at the Te Papa Museum in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.   Today, she manufactures the Lee Andersen Collection at her 16,000 square foot factory in Howard County.   Her label is currently found in 800 boutiques in the US and Canada.

More than 100 entries in the 2014 Competition were displayed free to the public for two weeks in September at 16 locations around Howard County.   Hundreds of people visited the displays.   The  June 2014 Hair and Makeup Competition attracted 1000+ visitors to Historic Savage Mill to see all the extreme hair and makeup designs professionally photographed on models wearing the unique 2014 artworks.
