It only took about 120 years, but an 1891 graduate of then-Western Maryland College, now McDaniel, recently made a donation to the college.

It was announced at McDaniel College's recent trustee-faculty dinner that about $6.7 million from the estate of 1891 alumnus Philip Henry Dorsey, of St. Clements Bay, will be used to establish an endowment for scholarships, according to information provided by the college.

This is the largest bequest for scholarships in the college's history. In contrast to the college's finances in the 1890s, one can only imagine how Dorsey's classmates would marvel at the size of the donation, especially since the first 25 years of the college were fraught with concern over the school's debt.

Local historian Dr. Jim Lightner said in an interview that Dorsey was one of 18 students to earn a bachelor's degree from the college in 1891. The college's total enrollment at the time was 154, he said.

Tragic news for fans of veteran blues-rock band Ten Years After. The band’s founding guitarist and singer Alvin Lee has died at the age of 68 after complications during “routine surgery.” The career of Alvin Lee is incredibly distinguished, and as a result, rock and metal legends Geezer ButlerBill Ward, Slash, Joe Satriani, Glenn Hughes and others have paid tribute to Lee in a series of memorial statements…. http://loudwire.com/ten-years-after-alvin-lee-dies-slash-black-sabbath-members-more-pay-tribute/?trackback=twitter

Alvin Lee Is Going Home: 'Ten Years After' Guitarist Dies

By MARK MEMMOTT March 06, 2013

Guitarist Alvin Lee, whose incendiary performance with the British band Ten Years After was one of the highlights of the 1969 Woodstock festival, has died.

He was 68. Lee's website says he "passed away early this morning [Wednesday] after unforeseen complications following a routine surgical procedure." An assistant to his daughter also confirmed the news to NPR.

His band's biggest hit — "I'd Love to Change the World" — came a couple years after Woodstock. We'll embed a clip from that.

[…]

[…]

If you haven't heard "I'm Going Home" in a while, click here.

According to the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, a good source for Woodstock history, Ten Years After's set on Aug. 17, 1969, came right after the performance by Country Joe and the Fish and right before The Band.

Update at 8:15 a.m. ET, March 7. From Morning Edition:

Our friends on Morning Edition have more on Lee, including clips of him playing. According to host Steve Inskeep, Ten Years After never played "I'd Love to Change the World" in concert, preferring to stick to the blues.
