Z on TV

Z on TV

I do not watch much of “Top 40” commercial television; however I have come to appreciate David Zurawik’s commentary on the contemporary pop-culture scene on the tube. It is intelligent and informative and keeps me up-to-date without having the dreadful experience of having to watch it.

About David Zurawik Click here for a larger image: http://twitpic.com/la8oe

I've been The Baltimore Sun's TV critic since 1989. My writings on TV and media have appeared in such publications as TV Guide, Esquire magazine and American Journalism Review.

I have a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park, and an M.A. in specialized reporting (on popular culture) from the University of Wisconsin.

I'm the author of The Jews of Prime Time (Brandeis University Press), a look at 50 years of Jewish characters and identity on network TV. I have also been with WYPR-FM (88.1) radio since 1994 and can be heard Thursday mornings at 7:30 doing a weekly "Take on Television" report.

Somewhere just outside of Reading, Pennsylvania, October 10, 2009 - - Although those of us who know Carroll County Times staff writer, Carrie Ann Knauer, understand that she has quickly become a brand-name and an institution all to herself; many are not aware that, according to Wikipedia, she is also a community located in Brecknock Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, located 3.4 miles from Adamstown and 0.9 miles from Alleghenyville.

According to “PA HomeTownLocator,” “Knauers is a community or populated place (Class Code U6) located in Berks County at latitude 40.247 and longitude -75.997 (Knauers Panoramio Photos). The elevation is 774 feet. Knauers appears on the Morgantown U.S. Geological Survey Map. Berks County is in the Eastern time zone (GMT -5). Observes DST? Yes. Current Time. In a write-up on AmericanTowns.com:

“Brecknock Township, (889 Alleghenyville Road Mohnton, PA 19540) [was] named after the cathedral town of Brecon, capitol of Breconshire (or Brecknockshire), Wales, was founded in 1740 as a part of Lancaster County. The Township was divided at the founding of Berks County in 1752. The earliest permanent settlers on the Berks County side were three Bowman brothers, namely Jacob, John, and Christian, who moved up from Pequea about 1735 to occupy land along the upper part of the Allegheny Creek.

“The first tax collector for Brecknock (Berks) was Jeremiah Ziemer who immigrated from Germany in 1738. The first tax list in 1752 contained 36 names, all of German, Alsatian, and Swiss origin. The first federal census in 1790 reported that there were 60 households in the Township. By 1870 there were four churches in Brecknock – two Mennonite churches, one Lutheran-Reformed Union church, and one independent church.

“By 1893 there were three U.S. Post Offices – Knauers, Alleghenyville, and Hummel’s Store, all of which were closed by 1913, after which postal service was provided from Mohnton. There were six one-room public schools operating in the Township by 1895 – Allegheny, Maple Grove, Stafford, Trostel’s, Gebhart (Union), and Remp’s, all of which were closed by Fall of 1955 when the new Brecknock School opened.

“In 1900 there were 203 property owners, 54 tenant families, and seven single men on the tax list. Total tax receipts for the year ending March 24, 1900 amounted to $1,355.00, nearly all of which went for road maintenance. Throughout its history Brecknock Township has been almost entirely agricultural.

“Until recent times, nearly all of its residents were engaged in dairy and related farming, or fruit and vegetable truck farming. Also several residents were employed in related occupations such as harness-making, blacksmithing, charcoal making for nearby iron furnaces, timbering, and the operation of sawmills and gristmills. Taverns were operated at various times at Knauers and Hummel’s Store.” (Additional information may be found at
Brecknock Township or here: http://www.americantowns.com/pa/mohnton/organization/brecknook_township

It is not known if our “The Knauer” was ever involved in the above-mentioned tavern.

For additional context, according to Wikipedia, the adjacent municipalities include Spring Township, Berks County (northwest); Cumru Township, Berks County (north); Robeson Township, Berks County (east); Caernarvon Township, Berks County (southeast); Brecknock Township, Lancaster County (southwest); and Adamstown Lancaster County (southwest)

A new generation discovers Ayn Rand

Click here for a larger image: http://twitpic.com/kp463

And it could not happen a moment too late…

I’m researching a column with the above working title… "A new generation discovers Ayn Rand" Meanwhile…

“Is Rand Relevant?” By YARON BROOK WSJ MARCH 14, 2009 http://tinyurl.com/d7prj3

“Ayn Rand died more than a quarter of a century ago, yet her name appears regularly in discussions of our current economic turmoil. Pundits including Rush Limbaugh and Rick Santelli urge listeners to read her books, and her magnum opus, "Atlas Shrugged," is selling at a faster rate today than at any time during its 51-year history.

“There's a reason. In "Atlas," Rand tells the story of the U.S. economy crumbling under the weight of crushing government interventions and regulations. Meanwhile, blaming greed and the free market, Washington responds with more controls that only deepen the crisis. Sound familiar?”

The Fountainhead top ten quotes

1. “Never ask people about your work.” (p. 33)

This is the advice Roark gives Keating when asked whether Keating should accept a scholarship to the prominent Ecole des Beaux Arts or a job at the New York's most prestigious architectural firm.

2. "You're too good for what you want to do with yourself” (p. 62)

Henry Cameron tells Roark that he will suffer greatly because in spite of designing the most beautiful buildings, they will remain on paper and never be erected while he will watch mediocre others reap high commissions and glory because they are willing to copy the past.

3. “If I found a job, a project an idea or a person that I wanted-I'd have to depend on the whole world. Everything has strings leading to everything else. We're all so tied together. We're all in a net, the net is waiting and we're all pushed into it by one single desire.” (p. 143)

Dominique explains her fears of desiring anything or anyone to the editor of the Banner after she turns down a promotion which would advance her career. The independently wealthy Dominique doesn't desire a career.

4. “It was not necessary to wonder about the reasons. It was necessary only to hate, to hate blindly, to hate patiently, to hate without anger, only to hate and let nothing intervene, and not let oneself forget, ever” (p. 194)

Keating realizes the depth of his hatred for Howard Roark after Roark returns the check he wrote to keep him quiet about the Cosmo-Slotnick Building. Roark entreats Keating not to fear because he would be ashamed to have his name associated with such a mediocrity.

5. “There is not a person in New York City who should be allowed to live in this building.” (p. 287)

After Roger Enright escorts Dominique to the Enright House, she writes in her column that no one should be allowed to inhabit the building. However, this is a veiled comment. Dominique really considers it so perfect that it should not be corrupted by people who will harm it and not appreciate its grandeur.

6. “We're alone. Why don't you tell me what you think of me” (p. 389)

After four architects redesign the Stoddard Temple into a home for “Subnormal Children,” Roark finally goes to see his redesigned temple where he meets Toohey who has been waiting for him. Toohey asks him to tell him what he thinks of him but Roark just looks quizzically at him. He hasn't been thinking of Toohey at all while Toohey has proudly believed he has destroyed Roark's peace of mind. He slithers away, dejected.

7. “I'm a parasite. I've been a parasite all my life.” (p.575)

Keating honestly tells Roark about how he perceives himself and begs him to design the Cortlandt Homes project for him and to put the name Keating on it. Roark tells him he will design the project as long as Keating agrees that absolutely no changes will made. Keating's statement demonstrates deep introspection but not enough for him to change his basic personality. He is doomed.

8. “One can't put on an act like that-unless it's an act for oneself, and then there is no limit, no way out, no reality.” (p. 600)

Keating has made progress as an individual. He sees the full effect of Toohey's evil nature and mind control in the older Katie who has come to be enslaved by Toohey's philosophy of altruism and communalism.

9. “It's I who have destroyed you, by helping you.” (p. 611)

Peter Keating explains to Howard Roark that things got away from him and two other architects ruined the Cortlandt building by making disfiguring additions. He takes responsibility but Roark says it was not Keating who destroyed Roark but Roark who destroyed Keating when he helped him by anonymously designing buildings under Keating's name for the satisfaction of seeing them constructed.

10. “We don't want any great men? I shall rule.” (p. 635)

In his lengthy monologue in Keating's apartment, Toohey finally confesses his intentions. He wants power and in this effort attempts to make people into selfless beings, who in addition to altruism and excessive guilt forget how to be happy themselves. Since great people don't buy into this philosophy and thus obstruct his path to complete power and domination, he wishes to eliminate them.

Johanna Harness says on her web site: “I write novels. I spend my days living in other worlds, connecting with imaginary people, and telling lies. When I’m not dissembling at a keyboard, I’m scheming what my characters will do next. Every chance I get, I’m stealing moments away from the real world so I can bleed words onto paper. It’s a good life.”

“Guy Babylon, from New Windsor, long-term keyboardist for Elton John has passed away” http://explorecarroll.com/obituaries/3374/babylon/

September 3, 2009 By Kevin Dayhoff

Guy Babylon, 52, died Wednesday evening in Los Angeles, California, according to family sources and Elton John’s official website.

He was born on December 20, 1956, in New Windsor, the son of Graham and Mary Babylon, owners of the Babylon Vault Company, a Carroll County business that has manufactured burial vaults since 1930.

After he attended Francis Scott Key High School he earned his BFA in music composition from the University of South Florida. In 1980, six months after graduation he moved to California, where he quickly established himself as an accomplished keyboardist and composer and respected session musician.

Babylon, as a young man, was known to be a national level swimmer and a family member noted with pride that he once beat Mark Spitz, of Olympic swimming fame. Babylon died of an apparent heart attack while swimming.

Elton John, who according to his official web site, is on holiday in Nice, France, said: “I am devastated and heartbroken at the death of Guy Babylon. Guy played over 1000 shows with me, and we worked together on The Road To El Dorado, Aida, Billy Elliot, Lestat and Gnomeo and Juliet, as well as on countless albums.

“He was one of the most brilliant musicians I ever knew, a true genius, a gentle angel - and I loved him so much. David and I send our deep condolences to Kathy, Max, Ben and Jessica, to Guy's parents, to Kathy's parents and to all his immediate loved ones.’

The web site reports, “Guy's first performance with Elton was for a benefit at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles in July 1988, and his first world tour as part of the Elton John Band began two months later in Miami, Florida.

“Guy became lead keyboardist on May 26, 1992, and has been the only synth man on stage since the Walden Woods Benefit Concert in the fall of 1993.”

UPDATE: Be sure to read Jennifer Jiggetts’
Carroll County Times story. She did a great job: “Elton John's keyboardist, New Windsor native dead” at 52 By Jennifer Jiggetts, Times Staff Writer Friday, September 04, 2009

http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/articles/2009/09/04/news/local_news/newsstory3_keyboardist_new_windsor.txt

When he was in seventh grade, Guy Babylon and several of his New Windsor friends formed a band.

They performed at the New Windsor carnival, gave small concerts by Babylon’s pool and won many talent shows in Carroll County. The band rehearsed wherever it could.

Those practices would set the foundation years later for a more famous gig for Babylon: backing up Elton John.

Babylon, John’s lead keyboardist, died Wednesday night in California. He was 52.

Inventing La: The Chandlers and Their Times

I’m watching Maryland Public Television – “Inventing La: The Chandlers and Their Times”

http://www.mpt.org/?q=schedule/detail/17904&chdate=2009-10-05

It is a fascinating tale of family, journalistic, and political intrigue… Also of note is the dynamic that in the very early days, up until the late 1950s to early 1960s, the media bias of, at least the LA Times, was conservative, pro-business and Republican… Part of the story of the documentary is the transition of the paper from conservative to straight-down-the-middle, if not a liberal tilt…

The MPT web site says:

This groundbreaking documentary traces the explosive emergence of multi-ethnic, modern Los Angeles during the single-family reign of four publishers of the Los Angeles Times. Each used the newspaper to pursue distinct agendas and impossible dreams, transforming the composition and character of Southern California itself; in the process, seducing a nation and the world with a new kind of American Dream.
