Mediaite: Wal-Mart to Get Homeless Elle Intern’s Trailer Out of Impound

Wal-Mart to Get Homeless Elle Intern’s Trailer Out of Impound by Tommy Christopher 4:21 pm, September 15th, 2009

http://www.mediaite.com/online/wal-mart-to-get-homeless-elle-interns-trailer-belongings-out-of-impound/

On September 3, I
filed a story about Brianna Karp, the homeless blogger who was thrust into the national spotlight when Ell’s E. Jean Carroll offered her a prestigious internship. I spent a good part of the rest of that day reading every word of Bri’s gripping, thoroughly entertaining blog.

That’s how I learned that, on August 23, her truck and trailer had been
impounded from a Wal-Mart that had given her permission to park there, and that she was accruing impound fees that included an $80 a day storage fee.

I called Wal-Mart’s media relations department that day to see what they had to say about it. They said they would get in touch with Brianna to find out more, and to work on a resolution.

I’m happy to report that Brianna emailed me last night to tell me that Wal-Mart officials will be meeting her…

[…]

Things are definitely looking up for Bri, who
appeared on CNN and the Today Show last week. Every step of the way, however, she reminds me that she wants to continue to focus on, and advocate for, the homeless.

Kanye West grabs mic from Taylor Swift at the MTV VMAs and makes a fool of himself

Kanye West grabs mic from Taylor Swift at the MTV VMAs and makes a fool of himself – it wasn’t hard for Mr. West. He’s a professional troll.

Click here for a larger image: http://twitpic.com/hp3da

September 14, 2009 by Kevin Dayhoff http://tinyurl.com/mt2bj4

By now many folks are aware of Kanye West’s cringe worthy YouTube moment when he jumped up on the stage last night at Radio City Music Hall during the MTV Video Music Awards and grabbed the microphone away from Taylor Swift and ranted that Beyoncé had been overlooked for the “Best Female Video” award.

Swift, 19, who had won the award for “You Belong With Me,” was just beginning to say, “I always wondered what it would be like to maybe win one of these someday, but never actually thought it would happen...”

Well, her moment in the sun that did not happen as a result of the crass, bizarre behavior of Kanye – anything goes, cuz I’m self-absorbed and narcissistic – West.

I can’t wait to read the reaction of my colleague and good friend, Kenny Burns, who is my resident Kanye West authority. Read, “Red Maryland: Memo to Kanye: Liberals Do Not Care About People, period,” By P. Kenneth Burns, the editor of Maryland Politics Today.

After I read Burns’ column, I was pondering; gee, I wonder how he really feels. Were you holding back on us Mr. Burns?

Last night, our hearts went out to Swift. It was her first award, and, well, West pissed on her parade ‘real good.’ She did not finish her acceptance remarks…

Fortunately as tacky and classless as West was; the hero of the hour was Beyoncé, who showed some grace, poise and class; and invited Swift up on stage to say a few words, when Beyoncé was awarded “video of the year” for “Single Ladies.”

According to one account I read, “Beyoncé recalled that she won her first VMA at age 17, as a member of Destiny's Child…”

Several years ago, I had taken an interest in Kanye West’s career after the release of his “The College Dropout” record debut in 2004.

Yeah, since I am also a college dropout, it was the title that first captured my attention…

Of course, that was before his September 2, 2005 outburst, “George Bush doesn't care about black people.” I’ve been quite successful in ignoring him ever since.

Oddly enough, if you will recall, that outburst came days after his “Late Registration” album had been released, which I had considered purchasing.

Apparently the fact that I did not purchase it did not cause Mr. West any problems. And since it was rather artistically creative, perhaps, in the end, the joke was on me and it was my loss.

It has been said, that his Tourette’s-like outburst about President Bush helped the sale of his album. That he was “rewarded” for his behavior.

Now, isn’t that stupid. Isn’t it elementary that if a person can behave so bizarrely towards someone or something in which you agree needed the rebuke – the same person may exhibit the same behavior in a manner that could be upsetting. Bad behavior in a cause in which you believe does not make the behavior acceptable.

Yeah, Yeah, I’m well aware of the Ezra Pound discourse on talent. That we can appreciate someone’s talent even though the artist may hold a worldview or behave in a manner that is abhorrent. Whatever.

It is my money and my time and I just cannot bring myself around to support a troll.

I have no problem disagreeing with an artist and enjoying his or her work. I have a problem with jerks. That said, I still like Neil Young, so where the line is drawn for me, is, well, I guess, unscientific.

A little research will reveal that Mr. West seems to have a knack for Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, for which he has not, obviously, been successfully treated.

Be sure to read, “EMA’s Shocker: Kanye Stage Invasion!,” on the MTV United Kingdom site:

“The Best Hip Hop winner lashes out after missing out on Best Video award...
22:47, Thursday, 2 November 2006

Click here to watch Kanye's stage invasion... Watch the EMAs again on Overdrive now...

“Kanye West unleashed an amazing outburst after failing to take home the gong for 'Best Video' for his 'Touch The Sky' promo at the EMAs.

“Crashing the stage as friends of the winners Justice V Simian collected their silverwear for 'We Are Your Friends', the hip hop star spat, "F*ck dis! (My video) cost a million dollars, Pamela Anderson was in it, I was jumping across canyons and sh*t! If I don't win, the awards show loses credibility. Nothing against you (J&S), but hell man."

“His verbal tirade left audience members gasping but it didn't end there.

“After the show the offended star continued to vent his spleen in the press conference.”

You simply must read the rest of the account, here: EMA’s Shocker: Kanye Stage Invasion!

This is priceless. You can’t this kind of stuff up. If I had included such a scenario in a short work of fiction, I would be berated because it failed to suspend disbelief…

Ya know folks. This could be serious. Mr. West may have some sociopathic psychopathy involvement, such as antisocial - dissocial personality disorder or Coprolalia.

So, maybe we should feel sorry for him, because he is obviously not a well man – a victim, if you will?

Nah, the guy’s a troll. What say you, Mr. Burns – take it away... And don’t hold back.

I was following Mr. Breitbart’s latest musings and meandering earlier today and I was reminiscing upon the last time I had a chance to talk with him. It was just over a year ago:

September 1, 2008

On opening day of the Republican National Convention I took the opportunity to visit the print media news centers that were set up. They were large and complicated partitioned beehives of activity with what seemed to be miles of wires everywhere. When I stopped by the Washington Post news center, I found well-known blogger Andrew Breitbart (http://www.breitbart.com/) and his business partner Larry Solov.

Mr. Breitbart was in make-up getting ready for a guest appearance on a Post news video… He was quite friendly and talkative and appeared to having the time of his life.

(Enlarge) EAGLE ARCHIVE

Last Sunday my family and I went on a history exploration trip to nearby Emmitsburg to visit the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

We are fortunate in Carroll County to have so many great places to visit nearby.

This summer, instead of a big vacation, we opted to spend our time -- and money -- close to home to the benefit of our local economy.

Day trips may be as simple as exploring the history of a local town or traveling to national and international destinations -- such as the Gettysburg or Antietam Civil War battlefields, or the Eisenhower National Historic Farm, also in Gettysburg.

Other great history excursions here in Carroll include the Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, Shriver Homestead, in Union Mills, the Historical Society of Carroll County, in Westminster, and the Strawbridge Shrine -- birthplace of American Methodism -- also in New Windsor.

Because Carroll has such a large Catholic population, many folks are familiar with St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, or simply Mother Seton as she is more often referred to locally.

For those who are not: Mother Seton is the first native-born U.S. citizen to be named a saint. She was canonized by Pope Paul VI on Sept. 14, 1975.

For everyone who has benefited from a Catholic school education, Mother Seton is the spiritual founder of Catholic school education in the United States,

Of course, for television trivia aficionados, the plot of the old television show starring Sally Field, "The Flying Nun," centered on a fictional nun who belonged to Mother Seton's order. The show even contained an occasional reference to Emmitsburg.

Forbes ranks West Point as nation's top college

I spent time over the Labor Day holiday with family members who work at the West Point United States Military Academy. They are quite proud that “Forbes ranks West Point as nation's top college.” See this article in “Inside the Army” News…http://www.army.mil/-news/2009/08/07/25619-forbes-ranks-west-point-as-nations-top-college/ Show more results from www.army.mil

I had taken note of the Forbes’ accolades a month ago, yet figure it deserves yet additional attention…

WEST POINT, N.Y. (Army News Service, Aug. 7, 200) - A report released Wednesday by Forbes magazine ranked the U.S. Military Academy as the top college in the country in their America's Best College review.

"Marked by an intense work ethic and drive to succeed on all fronts, the West Point undergraduate experience also allows graduates to leave without a penny of tuition loans to repay," Forbes stated in its release.

In the Forbes rating, West Point outpaced other highly-ranked schools such as Princeton (#2), Cal Tech (#3), Harvard (#5) and the U.S. Air Force Academy (#7).

"All of us at West Point are very proud that Forbes has rated us as the number-one college in the nation," said Brig. Gen. Patrick Finnegan, dean of the Academic Board at West Point. "This ranking recognizes the exceptionally high quality of a West Point education. It is always exciting to be validated by independent organizations."

West Point was founded in 1802 as America's first college of engineering. Its mission remains constant: to educate, train, and inspire cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of duty, honor, country and prepared for a career of service to the nation as an officer in the U.S. Army.

Joan Didion “Her prose is her servant”

Joan Didion “Her prose is her servant” http://tinyurl.com/le6r5e

Technically, Didion is immaculate and original. As early as 1963, literary critic Guy Davenport could say, "Her prose is her servant" (371). She understands grammar as a source of "infinite power":

To shift the structure of a sentence alters the meaning of that sentence, as definitely and inflexibly as the position of a camera alters the meaning of the object photographed.... The arrangement of the words matters, and the arrangement you want can be found in the picture in your mind.... The picture tells you how to arrange the words and the arrangement of the words tells you, or tells me, what's going on in the picture. (Didion 1986, 7)

“If I could believe that going to a barricade would affect man's fate in the slightest I would go to that barricade, and quite often I wish that I could, but it would be less than honest to say that I expect to happen upon such a happy ending” Joan Didion, Morning, After the Sixties 1979 p208
