Be part of the Carroll County Barn Quilt Trail
Coming this Fall

The Arts Council is partnering with the Carroll County Recreation & Parks, the Farm Museum and Everybody's Quilt Guild to develop a "Barn Quilt" trail like the one in Garrett County. We're looking for barn owners who would like to have an 8' painted quilt square hung on their barn. We hope to install 12 quilt panels this fall. Our barn selection criteria will include geographic diversity, good visibility from a main road, and the ability for 1-2 cars to pull over to take pictures. If your barn, or one you know of, fits this description, contact Jeff Degitz at ccrec@ccg.carr.org, for an application. This will be a wonderful celebration of our community's agricultural heritage and artistic traditions.

Remembering those from Carroll County who served in the Korean War

Remembering those who served in The Forgotten War - baltimoresun.com: "By Kevin Dayhoff, 9:32 a.m. EDT, August 5, 2013

Saturday, July 27, was the 60th anniversary for what is known as National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day.

Never heard of it? You are not alone.

It was 60 years ago that, according to my 1970 edition of "A Concise History of The United States Marine Corps 1775-1969," "Finally, after two years of frustrating and often fruitless meetings with the Communist negotiators, an armistice was signed at Panmunjom, and the fighting (in Korea) ended on 27 July 1953 …""

Unlike armed conflicts of the past, there was really nothing conclusive about the end of the active hostilities.

There has never been a peace treaty. Technically, the Korean War never ended. To this day, the U.S. still maintains 28,500 troops in South Korea in an effort to maintain an uneasy peace.
Growing up in Carroll County in the 1950s, I recall very little mention of the Korean War. At the time, Carroll, like much of the country, was trying to get accustomed to a new post-World War II economy. Residents were busy with new houses, jobs and the task of raising young families that followed the six years of World War II.

Many historians refer to the Korean conflict as "The Forgotten War." I tend to refer to it as "The Inconvenient War." History has unceremoniously relegated it to a footnote wedged in between World War II and Vietnam.

Arts Center Seeks Young Actors for Disney’s Aladdin Jr.

The Carroll County Arts Council, in partnership with the Maryland Ensemble Theatre, will be presenting a fully staged musical in November.  They invite young actors, singers and dancers in grades 6-8 to audition for the show on Friday, September 6th from 4:30-6:30 or Saturday, September 7th from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm.

Julie Herber of Maryland Ensemble Theatre will direct the production.  Tabetha White will serve as Assistant Director and Production Manager.  In addition, a limited number of volunteer internships are available for high school aged students who want to assist with the production.  Internship applications are available on our website.

Actors may choose either day to audition.  Registration forms will be available on the Arts Council’s website or at the Arts Center.  All actors should be prepared to sing 16 bars of a song of their choice, without accompaniment.  Actors should come wearing clothing appropriate for dance and stage movement (no skirts or flip flops).  Alternate audition times can be scheduled if needed.

Rehearsals will be from 4:30 to 6:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning September 17th.  Tuition for this in-depth theatre experience is $150 for Arts Council Members or $165 for non-members.  Scholarship assistance is available.   Show dates are November 15th, 16th, and 17th.   More information is available on our website- www.CarrollCountyArtsCouncil.org.
