Early spring 1879 bore witness to a curious number of low crimes and misdemeanors in Carroll County.
Historian Jay Graybeal brought a number of the stories to life a few years ago in research he conducted for the Historical Society of Carroll County.

Ahhh, the good old days. Can judges today order folks to leave town?
Seems to me that running certain folks out of town would be the perfect way to solve a few problems.

"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You” released by Led Zeppelin on
January 12, 1969
Although, on any given day, "Good Times Bad Times"
is my favorite tune from the 1969 debut album “Led Zeppelin,” which was
recorded in October 1968 and released on January 12, 1969, second among equals
from that album is the Led Zeppelin cover of the 1950s song by Anne Johannsen, "Babe
I'm Gonna Leave You.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrVDViSlsSM&feature=related
Joan Baez and The Association also covered this tune, at
some point in time earlier in the 1960s; however the Led Zeppelin cover version
has also remained my favorite…
"Good Times Bad Times" was the featured single and
opening track on the album. It was released as a single on March 10, 1969. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41BKMnoCc1c
I still, to this day, remember when the album was released
and at one point in time, I could tell you the title of every song on the album
- and I knew most of the lyrics to almost every song on the album… I wish I
still had a 8-track tape copy of the album. Now that would be a treasure…LOL

Smallwood artist Jerry DeWitt draws creative inspiration from his farm past
'Carroll County Farm Heritage' exhibit opens March 18 at

March 17, 2012|Story and photography by Phil Grout http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2012-03-17/explore/ph-ce-dewitt-and-wisdom-0318-20120317_1_oil-painting-smallwood-farm-life
When Jerry DeWitt paints a barn, there's a bit of the gentle
clanging of cowbells mixing in with the watercolors.
That sound echoes back to his grandfather's Depression-era
farm at the end of a lane in Bedford County, Pa.
He was just 2 years old when his father left home for good
and the youngster was uprooted from Lansing, Mich., to live with his
grandparents.
And in between trips to the pasture to the hand-dug well for
another bucket of water, or out to the shed for an arm load of firewood, the
sights and sounds and smells of farm life wrapped themselves around Jerry's
memory, eventually finding their way to paint and paper more than 30 years
later.
Many of those works will be displayed in the show,
"Carroll County Farm Heritage: Paintings by Jerry DeWitt," opening
Sunday, March 18, at Carroll Community College, 1601 Washington Road,
Westminster, with a reception from 2 to 4 p. m… http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2012-03-17/explore/ph-ce-dewitt-and-wisdom-0318-20120317_1_oil-painting-smallwood-farm-life

In 1895 local newspapers, “carried a baseball column every
week in the spring editions,” according to research by historian and Maryland
State Senator Joe Getty.
Getty wrote about his research in the early 1990s for the
Historical Society of Carroll County. “Following the Civil War, the sport of
baseball became increasingly popular in Carroll County. Large groups of
spectators would gather at the local ballfields to watch their friends and
neighbors take on the baseball clubs from nearby communities. The games not
only provided entertainment but also competitive outlets for rivalries between
Carroll County's towns and villages.”
Many readers have shared that some of their best childhood
memories centered on sports, especially baseball; whether it was pick-up
neighborhood baseball or attending local Little League or Babe Ruth League
baseball games.
When I visited the Orioles spring training practice in
Sarasota on February 23, I enjoyed chatting with the team’s Director of Public
Relations, Monica Barlow, from Ellicott City.
Our conversation quickly turned to Camden Yards… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0304-20120301,0,4207984.story
“It’s the 20th anniversary season of Camden Yards…,” said
Barlow. “You know it’s considered to the ‘the ball park that forever changed
baseball.’ (Now,) It’s the tenth-oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball… and
every ballpark since has been inspired by – or used (design) elements from the
(Camden) Yard(s.)
“We have a number of renovations (planned for Camden Yards)
that we’re excited about…,” continued Ms. Barlow. “Most notably the six
retired-number sculptures…”
According to the Orioles website,
“Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the beautiful baseball-only facility in downtown
Baltimore, became the official home of the Orioles on April 6, 1992.”
After last week’s column, some readers were curious about
where the early Orioles teams played. Before Camden Yards, many of us have fond
memories of attending games in the old Memorial Stadium on 33rd Street.
Memorial Stadium was the home of the American League Orioles
from April 15, 1954 to October 6, 1991. However, according to numerous sources,
including ballparksofbaseball.com, “The Baltimore Orioles of the International
League played the first game at Memorial Stadium on April 20, 1950.”
When the Baltimore Orioles were a part of the “American
Association League,” from1882 to 1889, the team played at a stadium called “Oriole
Park,” which was located at 25th Street and Greenmount Avenue. Between
1889 and 1950, the team played in a number of locations.
Beginning around 1916 the team played at a wooden stadium, Terrapin
Park at the corner of 29th Street and Greenmount Avenue, until it burned to the
ground on July 3, 1944.
And, for the reader who asked; yes, the former Federal
League Baltimore Terrapins baseball team (1914-1915) was a primary party in the
famous May 29, 1922 Supreme Court decision in the Federal Baseball Club v. National League suit. Justice Oliver
Wendell Holmes, Jr. wrote the majority opinion which determined that baseball
was not subject to the Sherman Antitrust Act… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0304-20120301,0,4207984.story
