CARRIE'S KITCHEN: Making Cranberry Sauce

Well written, great production values, super photography, but then again, I am Carrie and Kenny’s biggest fan. My only regret is that I was not asked to do the drawing of Carrie featured at the beginning of the video.

Meanwhile, Carrie, my household is experimenting with pumpkin soup next. Any suggestions?

Kevin Dayhoff - The Tentacle: A Little Turkey History and A Wish

A Little Turkey History and A Wish

Happy Thanksgiving! Tomorrow all of America will be celebrating the American version of the “Harvest Festival” by gathering their families together and watching football. Some may be aware that the annual holiday originated as a celebration to give thanks for the annual harvest.

Perhaps because of my family’s long agricultural history, Thanksgiving has always been a special holiday in Carroll County. Besides, I’m a fan of any holiday in which food is involved, especially turkey.

I stand in good company because the turkey is a uniquely American contribution to the global palette.

According to numerous sources, including Andrew F. Smith’s “The Turkey: An American Story,” “The Spanish encountered domesticated turkeys in Mexico by 1518, and within a few years they had been introduced into the West Indies and Spain. Shortly thereafter, turkeys were widely disseminated throughout Western Europe.”

Mediterraneo Ristorante Italiano by Kevin Dayhoff July 10, 2011

Mediterraneo by Kevin Dayhoff July 10, 2011

My family went to Mediterraneo Ristorante Italiano, 8 Westminster Shopping Center, Westminster, MD, 410-857-4646, for dinner Saturday evening and had a wonderful dinner.  Our server was friendly and fun and we had a great meal.

I had the cream of potato soup and the manicotti Mediterraneo.  The rest of my family had the eggplant parmigiana and veal piccata.

Dinner at Harry’s Main Street Grille in Westminster Maryland

Dinner at Harry’s Main Street Grille in Westminster Maryland

My family had dinner at Harry’s this evening (last Saturday, May 28, 2011.)  In addition to the delicious traditional food we have come to love and enjoy, the venerable Main Street Westminster restaurant has added some great new items on, literally, a new menu.  I had the new veggie sandwich, which was delightful.  And we got to visit with a number of friends and neighbors.

Check Harry’s out next time you anywhere near Westminster.  The servers are fun and friendly – and from the local community.  It is locally owned; and for three generations, the Sirinakis family has supported the community – especially art and cultural events.

The prices are quite reasonable and all the money you spend at Harry’s stays in Carroll County; supports local workers, and the local community.

Founded in 1946, Harry's Main Street Grille has become a dining landmark in downtown Westminster. Now in its third generation of ownership by the Sirinakis family, Harry's offers a great selection of American cuisine including burgers, paninis, wraps and pastas.

Their famous hot dogs are served Coney Island style with chili, mustard and onions, but definitely not sauerkraut!

Customers who absolutely must insist on having sauerkraut on their hot dogs will have to pay $85 for it in accordance with Harry's longstanding policy... More: http://westminster.patch.com/listings/harrys-main-street-grille

September 9, 2006

Billy has a great cooking class. Give him a call at (410) 876-7425 for more information.

According to Billy’s web site, “A classically trained chef by the U.S. Army, Bill is a licensed meat cutter, sous chef, saucier, banquet chef, executive chef, and is the sole proprietor of Giulianova in downtown Westminster. On top of that, he is proficient on the 12-string guitar.

“Bill has been a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1975, and is a religious education teacher at St. John's Catholic Church in Westminster. He is a follower of Saint Francis and spent a short time as a Fransican seminary student. His other religions include Baltimore Orioles Baseball, the Beatles, and an unhealthy obsession with the Three Stooges.

“Happily married for 24 years to his wife Jane, Bill is the father of a pair of daughters Clare and Beth. You can hear his voice through the laughter on his commercials on WTTR AM 1470.

He also sponsors the Giulianova Green and Gold Tailgate show, the official pre-game show of McDaniel College football and basketball on WTTR's broadcasts, and he has happily fed more than his fair share of Bair Stadium tailgaters.

“Opened in 1986 by Tony D'Eugenio, Giulianova has been a cornerstone of downtown Westminster's Main Streetcommunity for two decades, serving the town's Italian grocery needs.

“Bill Schroeder bought the store from Tony in the summer of 2003. While the line of ethnic foods has greatly expanded, Bill has never deviated from the principle of selecting the finest quality Italian goods for Giulianova's customers.

“The hoagies are the same as the day the doors opened in 1986, that is to say, they are still the best in town. The lasagnas, sauces, and other products produced in the store are derived from the tradition passed down by Mama D'Eugenio. After handing them down to her son Tony, she was more than happy to share them with Bill.

“Don't bother driving to PhiladelphiaNew York, or evenBaltimore. Giulianova has been, and will be your source for the finest Italian goods, right in your backyard!”

Find out more at his web siteherehttp://www.brothersun.biz/index.html.
