Dancin' the Madison on "The Buddy Deane Show"

The Buddy Deane Show, a teen dance show which originated on Channel 13 – WJZ TV, in Baltimore, began its first show on the air on Sept. 9, 1957. It remained on the air until Jan. 4, 1964.

I had always understood that it went off the air because WJZ refused to integrate the show and have black and white folks dance together. Apparently in recent years the reasons why the show was cancelled are subject to disagreement and discussion.

Oral tradition has it that Buddy Deane once held a dance in Westminster on a farm. I wonder where?

Apparently John Waters modeled his 1988 movie, “Hairspray,” after the Buddy Deane Show. Waters wrote a great piece on the Buddy Deane Show in Baltimore magazine in April 1985. It is a must-read.
