The Westminster Municipal Band

The Westminster Municipal Band

Musicians wanted – The Westminster Municipal Band. I found this recruitment display on June 11, 2020 in the window at Coffey Music in Westminster and it made me smile. No matter how much I tried – I could not get a better picture of the window display. If you are interested in joining the band – email the band with this address: recruiting@westminsterband.com. For more information go to: www.westminsterband.com

I have great childhood memories of playing in the Wm. F. Myers and Sons Band. My wife, Caroline, currently plays the bassoon in the Westminster Band.

I have written about the band on a number of occasions – but this piece, from 16-years ago in 2004 might be my favorite. Interestingly enough, although I wrote it in 2004 for the Baltimore Sun, this version has never been published.

A History of the Westminster Municipal Band

Excerpted from the July 15th, 2004 unpublished long version of “Heavy Metal Garage Band in Westminster finds Home” by Kevin Dayhoff

Between 1857 and 1952 there were 40 bands incorporated in Carroll County. Records of the Westminster Municipal Band go back as far as the 1860s.

In 1893 it was incorporated as the “Westminster City Band.” According to Sandy Miller, the Director of the Westminster Municipal Band, “the band is now officially celebrating 111 years of sharing music in Carroll County and the surrounding tristate area.” Band Director Miller was very helpful in filling me in on the rich history of the Westminster Municipal Band – for it seems our “Garage Band” is the Westminster Municipal Band.

The band has undergone many changes throughout its 111 years. The uniforms have changed color, from tan to Green and Gold. The name also changed in 1950 when the band reorganized as the “Westminster Municipal Band” and the City of Westminster pledged financial support to the group. The Color Guard was formed in 1961 and really sets our band apart from the other bands. (Westminster Municipal Band” By Westminster Municipal Band Director Sandy Miller, July 12th, 2004.)

From the beginning, the band has been a totally volunteer organization. Those who participate are involved because of their love of music and the opportunity to share that love with the community. Members range in age from 14 – 80 and there are no auditions or membership fees.

A big part of the band’s success is that it functions as a family. The group literally has many members of the same families as members of the band. Other family members attend band functions as our “groupies.”

The Westminster Municipal Band regularly participates in local Firemen’s parades; Memorial Day and July 4th celebrations in and around the Carroll County area. The highlight of the Band’s playing season is the yearly trek in June to Ocean City for the Maryland State Firemen’s Association Convention. As the “Official Band of the MSFA,” the band leads the parade each year down Baltimore Street.

One big part of the band’s success is the relationship we have built with the City of Westminster which has provided some financial support to the band since the 1950’s while the Band provides musical assistance and entertainment at many City events.

The Band and the Westminster Fire Company have a long history together as well, with many Fire Company members in the Band and the Color Guard. In the early part of the 20th century, and again near the end of the century, the band met for their weekly rehearsals at the Westminster Fire Hall located on Main Street.

In 1998, after the Fire Company moved to its new building on John Street, the Band was again looking for a new home. That search ended, again, with the help of the Westminster Volunteer Fire Company. The Fire Company was in possession of the old Plumbing, Heating Supply Co building on John Street, and wasn’t using the space. An agreement was reached and the band moved to 40 John Street in January, 2001.

In the spirit of the many private – public partnerships that have made Westminster successful, The Westminster Municipal Band, The Westminster Fire Department and the City of Westminster have joined forces to give the Band a long-term home.

In the spring of 2003, the Fire Company demolished the back portion of the building, but left the area the band rented standing. It was decided that the Band, working with the City and Fire Company, could renovate the existing storefront to better accommodate the band’s needs. Members of the Band, Fire Company and the City have provided much of the labor, while the City has worked to provide a portion of the funds needed by way of a downtown rehabilitation grant fund.

July 6, 1866 Benjamin Disraeli

July 6, 1866 Benjamin Disraeli

Not sure of my favorite date in history, but July 6, 1866 is fairly significant. On that date the Earl of Beaconsfield Benjamin Disraeli succeeded Wm. Ewart Gladstone as the Chancellor of the Exchequer. From 1850 through the 1860s, Lord Derby had formed three governments. Disraeli served as the Leader of the House of Commons and Chancellor of the Exchequer for all three governments.

It was during this third term as the Leader of the House of Commons and Chancellor of the Exchequer that he expertly guided The Reform Act of 1867 through Parliament "marvelous parliamentary skill." This signal act of Parliament increased the number of voters in the UK by 88 per cent.

It was this momentous victory over overwhelming odds that helped lead him to become Prime Minister in February 1868 – after serving in government since he was first elected in July 1837. After Queen Victoria gave him permission to form a government he is known to have said, “"I have climbed to the top of the greasy pole." He went on to be one of the most influential prime ministers in English history.

The second day of the Battle of Gettysburg is one of the most significant in history. As far as an encounter that only lasted “hours,” I might rank the Battle of Cannae, August 2, 216 B.C., in the 2nd Punic War – for it effect on socio-political public policy dynamics to this very day.

But perhaps the most significant single day in history is September 9, 9 CE. That was the day of the Battle of Teutoburg Forest. That single day affects worldwide politics, governments, and public policy to this very day. I have written about it a number of times including a vignette here: https://www.facebook.com/notes/kevin-earl-dayhoff/the-hermann-monument-detmold-north-rhine-westphalia-germany/10157070454737654/

At the end of the day, the battle resulted in three entire Roman Legions, the famed Seventeenth, Eighteenth, and Nineteenth Legions, being ambushed and totally destroyed in the swamps of the Teutoburg Forest – east of the Rhine, in what is known today as North West Germany in the German states of Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. After the battle, their commander Publius Quintilius Varus committed suicide.

Perhaps the only worse event in the early history of the Roman Empire was the Battle of Cannae, August 2, 216 B.C., in the 2nd Punic War, at the hands of Hannibal in which 50,000 legionaries died in one day. Rivaled only by the later disasters of the Battle of Adrianople (378 CE) or Alaric's Sack of Rome (410 CE.)

(Sadly – the link is dead….. When I was double-checking to make sure the link is dead I came across this - Read what Wonkette says about this column here: https://www.wonkette.com/breaking-17-of-newspaper-columnists-clearly-virgins)

BOSTON There are thousands of columnists in America, so a survey that drew 154 responses should be taken with a grain of salt. But the poll did offer some insights into the profession, including an interesting comparison to sex.

The University of San Francisco's J. Michael Robertson unveiled the results of his survey Saturday at the National Society of Newspaper Columnists (NSNC) conference here. Columnists polled included salaried and freelance writers from 38 states and Canada who write in categories such as political, general-interest, humor, and metro.

When asked "what writing a column is like," 26% of salaried columnists called it a job and 17% likened it to sex. But Robertson explained that this wasn't necessarily a positive thing; he said some columnists feel like they're "married to a nymphomaniac" because they have to start working on another column as soon as they're finished with the previous one.

Of the columnists who call themselves political, 22% identified themselves as Democrats, 44% as independents, and 20% as Republicans.

The survey also found that 52% of respondents said they've never had a column killed.

Respondents have been a columnist for a median of seven years. Median salary for the full-timers is $50,000 to $60,000, and median pay for each freelance column is $50. Freelance columnists, on average, make only 10% of their income via their columns.

Freelancers have written a median of 400-500 columns during their careers, and full-timers 1,000-1,500. At least one full-timer responding to the poll has penned 7,500 columns.

Robertson, who has written for the San Francisco Chronicle, intends to update the survey as more columnists respond. "It's an ongoing project," said Robertson, who invited columnists interested in participating to e-mail him at robertson@usfca.edu.

Earlier in the conference, former NSNC President Mary Ann Lindley recalled the results of an informal columnist survey taken about 20 years ago. Lindley, now editorial page editor of The Tallahassee (Fla.) Democrat, said most of the respondents back then were white males -- and only 32% had computers at home.

Sept. 17, 2013: Westminster celebrates diversity at TriStreet block party

By Kevin Dayhoff, 3:45 p.m. EDT, September 17, 2013

July 5, 2020 – I am cleaning some of my old Google Drive files (because I am about to run out of storage capacity.) And I ran across this old article from September 17, 2013 about working with my friend Dr. Darcel Harris. The links still work but it does not provide a preview of the pictures...

Fully equipped with a spatula, sunglasses, hat and an apron, Darcel Harris was all smiles Sept. 15 as she answered questions, cooked hamburgers, and hot dogs and helped coordinate activities for over 300 folks who attended the 11th annual Pennsylvania Avenue – TriStreet Association block party in Dutterer Family Park in Westminster.

The event included multi-cultural food dishes made by residents, local fruits and vegetables donated by local farmers, dancing, pie eating contests, and educational activities for children provided by the Westminster Police Department, the Carroll County NAACP and GROW Mission (God’s Regeneration of Westminster) – one of the many local grassroots community organizations in which Harris participates.

According to Harris, the March 2013 recipient of the of the 21st annual Carroll County Human Relations Commission achievement award, the neighborhood get together was the brainchild of former Westminster City Councilwoman, 1991-1995, Rebecca Orenstein.

Celebration of the wonderful life of Tommy Dent at Pritt's Funeral Home.

July 3, 2020: At the celebration of the wonderful life of Tommy Dent at Pritt's Funeral Home.

The chapel is as full as the COVID-19 guidelines will allow.

Strawbridge United Methodist Church Pastor Ross graciously gave me an opportunity to say a prayer.

It is wonderful gathering of friends, family, and community leaders.

I shared with the folks a prayer. Please take this opportunity to join me in a prayer for my friend.

Tommy was a wonderful friend, a great leader and lived a life of grace. Tommy got it honest. His parents were wonderful and kind people. Tommy was extremely talented. He worked hard at his small business. Westminster is a much better place because of Tommy. He will be greatly missed.

Let us bow our heads and join in a short prayer.

O god of grace and glory, we remember before you today our brother Tommy Dent. We thank you for giving him to us to know and to love as a companion in our pilgrimage on earth. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family at this very difficult time.

Those we love don't go away. They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear.

May memories of happy times sustain us, the support of family and friends comfort us, and may God's love embrace you and your family and bring you peace.

Rest in paradise my friend. See you again someday. God be merciful to your good soul.

Thinking of you as you find peace during your journey and sending strength to your family as they mourn. I pray that peace will be found for all.

No words can express how much this hurts.

Amen

NPR: K-Pop's Digital 'Army' Musters To Meet The Moment, Baggage In Tow

June 24, 20202:00 PM ET Heard on Morning Edition HAERYUN KANG

A week before President Trump held his controversial campaign rally in Tulsa, Okla., was when Viviana Dark, a K-pop fan from Wisconsin (who has requested pseudonymity over concerns of online harassment), first heard of plans to "sabotage" the event. Users on TikTok, the exceptionally popular social-video platform, were urging others to reserve tickets to the rally, with no intention of actually going. "You know how a TikTok challenge happens? It was kind of like that. 'Everybody go do this!' And it spread like wildfire," Dark, 19, tells NPR Music.

She signed up for two seats, received a confirmation email from the Trump campaign — "I'm counting on my loyal supporters like you" — and never showed up to the rally, which drew just a few thousand supporters to the 19,000-seat auditorium on June 20.

It's not clear how much TikTok teens and K-pop fans should be credited for the rally's disappointing turnout; Trump's campaign originally claimed it received more than a million requests for tickets. A stage prepared for overflow was never used.

Dark, who supports the girl groups TWICE and GWSN, is no stranger to political activism in coordination with her K-pop community. She has a Twitter group chat with fellow idol fans from all over the world, where they exchange info about stars, petitions and hashtag movements. To "clog up" the platform, she tweeted #WhiteLivesMatter and #KeepAmericaGreat hashtags, coupled with irrelevant fancams of her favorite stars, as a way of diluting the usefulness and relevance of the tags.

"I'm Black before I'm a K-pop stan," she says. "The main point of why we were fighting was for the Black Lives Matter cause, not to get recognized [as K-pop fans]."

But getting recognized they are, as "maestros of social media," "an unexpected ally," "unlikely heroes." This month, fans of BTS matched the boy band's $1 million Black Lives Matter donation in roughly a day. Others are credited with flooding the iWatch Dallas app with fancams (and sinking its App Store ranking) after the Dallas police asked people to report "illegal activity" from the George Floyd and Black Lives Matter protests.
