'It's imperative to offer a different perspective': Stephen Janis is Baltimore's alternative journalist

Stephen JanisHe might beshadowing an apartment manager dealing with suspected drug dealers one day and discussing the policing of crime with veteran detectives the next. Everyday, Stephen Janis aims to be the journalist on the ground, covering crime and corruption stories missed by the mainstream.

Janis is an award-winning investigative reporter in Baltimore and co-founder ofInvestigative Voice, a site dedicated to in-depth reporting and holding those in power to account. He is passionate about transforming a traditional craft by maximising its potential online. It is this approach, he told Journalism.co.uk, that gives his site an edge when it comes to competing with mainstream media... http://www.journalism.co.uk/5/articles/540019.php

StrikeMePink: My Father’s Eyes

StrikeMePink: My Father’s Eyes
One of the things I have wanted to do for a while was visit the Newseum in Washington D.C. The museum, which is dedicated to journalism, is shiny and new and in a wonderful location right in view of the Capitol on Pennsylvania Avenue. However, unlike the Smithsonian Museums only blocks away, the Newseum is not free. In fact its pretty much $20 for entrance. So I decided I’m going to go with my dad, because a) he loves museums and b) if he goes he’ll pay for me.

But I also choose to go with my dad because he’s pretty much made it impossible for me to go to a museum without him...  http://strikemepink6.wordpress.com/2010/08/23/my-fathers-eyes/

There were bunnies, dogs, chickens, horses, ponies, tractors, trucks, proud Moms and Dads and plenty 4-H children and young adults on display at the Carroll County 4-H and FFA Fair parade Sunday evening.

The hour-long parade featured approximately 31 floats said Rick Barber, who along with his wife, Brenda Barber, Danny Graf, Ashley Barber and Tammie Harris, served as this year’s fair parade committee superintendents.

This year’s parade featured the themes, “4-H is open to all,” and “Come one, come all, the fair has it all,” explained Rick.

Colonial East Main Street Westminster is reflected in the window of the front door at the new coffee shop, Birdie’s Café, which just opened at 233 East Main Street.

To the delight of many a Main Street Westminster caffeine addict, Sherri Hosfeld Joseph opened a coffee shop - Birdie’s Café http://www.birdiescoffee.com/ on July 13, 2010.

Joseph, a professional artist, designer, and photographer, was able to utilize much of the fixtures and equipment left behind almost two-years ago, however, she has worked since last January meticulously cleaning, painting, and planning and researching every detail for the shop with co-workers Danes Menges and Emily White

… local artists Susan Williamson and Becki Maurio seated at the table…

Customers Alex Stamm and Jenna Winegar, North Carroll High School graduates from Hampstead, were more than happy to take a break from their computer and answer a few questions.
