Silver Run Items—The hotel question is again being discussed among the people of our village. There was a new applicant around for signers, but we cannot say at present whether he will succeed in procuring them or not.

There have been no hotels in this place since last May, and since that time every thing has moved along quietly and all appear to be as happy and hearty as they were before the hotels were closed. But it seems that some of those that do feel happy and hearty since the hotels are closed are still not contented.

It is rumored that some of them that fought hard to have the hotels closed last spring are now giving their consent to have them opened again. This may be a false report, which we hope it is, and if it is not, hereafter we cannot judge our good people by their appearance at first sight.

Many Carroll County residents are getting a case of nostalgic Super Bowl fever as they look forward to Sunday's AFC championship contest between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots.

For more than 120 years — since football debuted at then-Western Maryland College on Oct. 31, 1891 — football has been a part of the history of Carroll County.

Not to be overlooked is the fact that since July 1949, Baltimore football teams have held summer practice in Westminster. Names like Raymond Berry, Jim Parker, Art Donovan, Gino Marchetti, Lenny Moore, Eugene (Big Daddy) Lipscomb, Alan Ameche, and Wilbur (Weeb) Ewbank, just to mention a few, have become an important part of our Carroll County cultural history.

And yes, there is also that quarterback that was cut by the Pittsburg Steelers in 1956.

What was his name? Oh yeah, right. Johnny Unitas.

The Maryland State Police put the Maryland snow emergency plan in effect for Carroll County MD at 2 a.m.

The Maryland Department of Transportation announced that the Maryland State Police put the Maryland snow emergency plan in effect at 2 a.m. Saturday morning for Carroll County.

Previously the snow emergency plan went into effect the previous Friday evening for much of Western Maryland counties: at 11 p.m. for Allegany County; 10:30 p.m. for Garrett County and 11:30 p.m. for Washington County.

According to the department of transportation, the state police declare snow emergencies after receiving input from the Maryland State Highway Administration.

Once the snow emergency has been declared, parking is prohibited on streets and roads that are designated as snow emergency routes and the snow tires, all weather tires and or chains are required for vehicles traveling on the roadways.

When checked at 2:45 a.m., the National Weather Service forecast for Westminster and Carroll County had a “winter weather advisory posted.” “Snow before 4 am, then snow, freezing rain, and sleet. Low around 26. East wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total nighttime ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. Total nighttime snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.”

For Saturday night the weather service was forecasting mostly cloudy skies. But most importantly for Ravens fans, the Sunday forecast says, “A slight chance of rain, freezing rain, and sleet after noon. Increasing clouds, with a high near 33. East wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.” And later Sunday night, Rain likely, possibly mixed with freezing rain, becoming all rain after 1am. Cloudy, with a low around 32. East wind between 3 and 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.”

Maryland Senate Session Adjourned in Memory of Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler - Marylanders for Joe Getty January 18, 2012

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin and I attended the funeral yesterday for Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler. In our official capacities, we offered condolences from all Maryland citizens to the family for their loss.

Today, at the end of the Senate legislative session, I moved that the Senate adjourn in memory of Airman 1st Class Seidler as a tribute to this Maryland Fallen Hero.

Seidler was 24-years-old and lived in Westminster where he graduated from Westminster High School in 2006.

When he joined the Air Force, he was accepted into the elite EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) unit. He was well-aware of the dangers he faced - the EOD personnel comprise only 1% of the Air Force but suffer 25% of the casualties.

On January 5, 2012, Seidler was part of a military convey of 27 vehicles engaged in hostile combat operations in the Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Earlier that day, his unit had defused two IEDs (improvised explosive devices) so that the convoy could continue its maneuvers. Tragically, his truck was hit by a third IED that killed Seidler and two other airmen.

This season has marked the 120th anniversary of the football team at McDaniel College.

According to Dr. James Lightner's history of the college, "Fearless and Bold," the first football season at then-Western Maryland College, in 1891, consisted of five games.

"On October 31, 1891, the first WMC football game was played in Westminster" against Pennsylvania College, now known as Gettysburg College.

Certainly many people were disappointed when the Baltimore Ravens announced Dec. 2 that the teamwill not be returning to its McDaniel College summer training camp.

In a Carroll Eagle article that day on ExploreCarroll.com,Westminster Mayor Utz spoke for many, "It's almost a 50-year traditionthat's being broken… That's the sad part about it."

The tradition and history of Baltimore football andWestminster first began when the newspaper announced ran on Feb. 11, 1949,"College Campus To Be Used By Colts … Coach Isbell Expects to Bring 55 Playersto Train, Starting in July … Baltimore's football Colts are going to train atWestern Maryland College this year."

The article in the now defunct Democratic Advocate continued,"Dr. Lowell S. Ensor, president of the Methodist school, and Walter S.Driskill, Colts general manager, have signed a contract providing for thecity's All-America Football Conference squad to use the Westminster College'scampus as a pre-season base of operations, it was announced…"

The history of football in Baltimore — and Westminster — cantrace one of its lineages to the All-America Football Conference in 1946 andanother lineage to the NFL in 1944.

The first football team in Baltimore began on Dec. 28, 1946,when the bankrupt Miami Seahawks franchise, of the All-American Football Conference, wasawarded to Baltimore.

Just over two-years later, according to the 1949 newspaperarticle, Coach Cecil Isbell said he expected to take a Colt squad toWestminster, "We plan to begin practice about five weeks before ouropening contest..." More than 500 friends, family and neighbors braved gray skies and a steady drizzle on Tuesday to pay final respects to Airman 1st Class Matthew Ryan Seidler, a Westminster man killed in Afghanistan on Jan. 5.

Seidler was killed Jan. 5 from injuries suffered from an improvised explosive device attack during a combat operation in volatile enemy territory in Shir ghazi, Helmand province, southern Afghanistan. He had been assigned to the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron, Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. He was one of three service members who died in the attack.

Holy Cross Hall in the Church of the Ascension will be thesite of the annual Carroll County birthday party on January 19 at 7:00 p.m.Enjoy cake and punch with fellow Carroll Countians as we celebrate the 175thanniversary of the County's founding in 1837.

"Meet Dr. Beanes."

Through a first-person living history presentation by PaulE. Plamann, a senior staff member at Fort McHenry National Monument, we willdiscover a lesser known, but very important, figure in the story behind the1814 British attack on Baltimore and the writing of "The Star-SpangledBanner."

After the Battle of Bladensburg in August 1814, as theBritish forces were withdrawing from Upper Marlboro, two drunken stragglerswere arrested by Dr. William Beanes, and thrown into jail.

One escaped, caught up to his unit and reported what hadhappened. A detachment of British soldiers returned to Upper Marlboro to freethe imprisoned soldier and to arrest Dr. Beanes.

In order to obtain the release of Dr. Beanes, thetownspeople of Upper Marlboro enlisted the help of Francis Scott Key ofGeorgetown.

Beanes, Key and an American army colonel (Skinner) weretaken into custody by the British and detained eight miles off-shore from theshelling of Ft. McHenry. "By dawn's early light," they saw theAmerican flag still flying over Ft. McHenry which led to Key's penning whatbecame our national anthem.

At the stroke of midnight New Year’s Day in downtownWestminster, nothing dropped. Not a brightly lighted ball - or anything, forthat matter.

As the crowd shouted in unison, “five, four, three, two,one; Happy New Year” - a large American flag was raised on a bright yellowbucket lift donated by Ben’s Rental. “2012” accompanied the flag in numbers inbright lights on a homemade four-by- eight Styrofoam backboard powered by a portablegenerator.

“Hey, you know, I mean, why not, we’re always looking up inWestminster…and if anything, we’re patriotic…,” said Westminster Kevin Utz witha broad grin, as he nodded approvingly at the flag suspended about thirty-five-feetin the air above Main Street.

With the temperature in the lower 40s, no snow and hardlyany wind, the weather was perfect for almost 500 people who attended the firstannual Westminster New Year’s Eve celebration in historic downtown WestminsterSaturday night.

Lori Graham, who spearheaded the event, had put a great dealof thought as to “what the heck do you drop” for a new Westminster New Year’sEve tradition. Oh, there were plenty of silly ideas, smiled Graham devilishly.In the end, it was decided to not drop anything at all.

In honor of the troops, the men and women in uniform, cominghome from the Middle East, Graham wanted to honor their service by raising theflag for the Carroll County New Year’s celebration in the first unit block ofWest Main Street. “I wanted a patriotic Westminster family-oriented event.”

The Westminster police and the Westminster street departmentblocked-off the area just minutes before 11:30 p.m., Saturday evening, as folkshad already begun to gather.

Westminster Councilman Tony Chiavacci was there, with thirtyfolks from his New Year’s Eve party. “I brought the whole party here,” saidChiavacci as he peered over the crowd. “Great to see everyone here… Give us acouple of years and look out Times Square,” in a reference to the hundreds ofthousands who attend the traditional dropping of an expensive Tiffany Ball.

New York City got started on its New Year’s Eve celebrationover a hundred years ago - in 1906. This was Westminster’s first year for afamily-community celebration and Graham and city officials and other communityleaders got started on last Saturday’s event, about 100-days ago...

“Just like New York,” said Bernie Stallknecht, fromHampstead. She was there with her family. “We unusually go the (Baltimore)harbor. We wanted to support a Carroll County celebration… (This was) justwonderful. Keep it local.”

“No wonder they came here. New York hasn’t got anything onWestminster,” added Graham, as families hugged and kissed and strangers greetedeach other with “Happy New Year.”

Westminster Volunteer Fire Department President BobCumberland, watched from the back of the crowd with fire department treasurerBob Ruby and Westminster Police Chief Jeff Spaulding – who was busycoordinating crowd control with Captain Nancy Yeager.

“Happy New Year – be safe in 2012. We’re thankful for allthe community support last year and looking forward to even better things thisyear,” said Cumberland.

Ruby, who also serves with the fire police, stopped in themiddle of his greeting to listen to his radio. “Happy… wait a minute. Well,there goes the first call of the year, shrubs on fire from fireworks… Where wasI? Oh, Happy New Year.”

Utz noted that he was “overwhelmed with the turn-out. Wethought we might just get a few folks – a Westminster crowd - from the downtownrestaurants. But, families came from all over Carroll County,” said Utz.

Long after midnight, Utz, Graham, Westminster StreetSuperintendent Larry Bloom, Westminster Administrator of Economic DevelopmentStan Ruchlewicz and his wife, Pat, waited patiently to dismantle the flag andlights while families lined-up to have their pictures taken with the “2012”display.

Ruchlewicz was all smiles as he and his wife clicked-awaywith cameras handed to them. “Great turn out for a first time event,” saidRuchlewicz, a seasoned urban planner and veteran of helping putting together manyevents over the years. “Especially for a family-centered event at midnight…”

Mike Johnson, from Westminster, was also pleased with theevent and added, “All traditions have to start somewhere…” as he surveyed thefamilies having their pictures taken.

Bloom, who is also in charge of the city’s snow clearingoperations, was glad for good weather. “This weather was great for a good turnout,” said Bloom as he began to unplug the lights.

“This was awesome,” Graham kept saying to no one inparticular. “Just awesome that so many families came out. It’s good to have alocal community event for families right here in Carroll County.”

Peter Frampton sold millions of records with the help of a customized Gibson guitar. Three decades ago, that guitar was destroyed in a plane crash ... or so he thought.

The story begins in 1970, when Frampton and his old band Humble Pie scored a gig playing two sets a night at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. Frampton says the first night was a rough go: The guitar he was using fed back at loud volumes and made soloing a chore. After the show, an audience member approached him and offered to help.

"He said, 'Well, look, I have a Les Paul that I've sort of modified myself a little. Would you like to try it tomorrow?'" Frampton tells weekends on All Things Considered host Guy Raz. "I said, 'Well, I've never really had much luck with Les Pauls, but you know what? At this point, I'll try anything.'"

The arrangement turned out to be love at first strum. "I used it that night, and for both sets, I don't think my feet touched the ground the whole time," Frampton says. "I mean, I levitated."

That guitar — a shiny black number with an added pickup — became Frampton's signature instrument. He continued to use it with Humble Pie, and in his solo material, played it almost exclusively for years. It even made the cover of his classic 1976 live album, Frampton Comes Alive!

In 1980, while Frampton was on tour in South America, the guitar was put on a cargo plane in Venezuela, en route to Panama. The plane crashed right after takeoff.

Seabolt, who was the art department chair at WestminsterHigh School, said that when she was in her 20s she saw a woman exhibiting thenow-rare tinsel painting at a fair in Pennsylvania. She was so impressed thatshe learned as much as she could about the craft; gaining knowledge and skillsthat she now passes on to her own students in an effort to keep this “dyingart” alive.

Tinsel painting was highly popular in England and France inthe 1800s. It started as an artistic way for women to re-purpose foil, ortinsel, as the English called it, from teas that their husbands brought home.Tinsel painting involves painting in reverse on glass with stains and acrylicpaint. Once painted, foil, or tinsel, is placed behind the transparency, givingit a glitter.

“Tinsel painting is a beautiful type of art that is notaround anymore. I teach it in hopes that the craft will not die out completely”Seabolt said.

Seabolt spends her summers teaching silk scarf painting andtinsel painting at Common Groundheld at McDaniel College. The irreverent artist, Salvador Dali, sizzled in his own right; but throw in the fire of his passionate wife and muse, Gala, and you can well understand how a clock could melt in their presence. (google: "The Persistence of Memory" by Dali)

In a powerful one act/one person play sponsored by Michael and Kathy Bush, owners of Home Resource, (a showroom of mouth watering contemporary furniture in Sarasota,) the Blue Scarf Collective of Tampa presented My Unspeakable Confessions: Gala Dali Declines to Explain Herself, beautifully written by Heather L. Jones, to sold out crowds on Nov. 25th and 28th.

This is Home Resource's first collaboration with the Dali Museum and Blue Scarf Collective. Looks like there may be a repeat January 2012 performance at HR, which I suggest you run out and see.

Roxanne Fay brilliantly played Gala, Salvador Dali's charismatic, devoted and headstrong seductress. Tarot cards, a favorite pastime of Gala's, were read, one by one, to cleverly introduce the chapters of Gala's personal story, an act of dramatic creation itself. The lady did as she pleased.

Through Ms. Fay's moving performance, we got up close and personal to Gala's all consuming love for Dali (and herself) and his equally intense connection to her. She wished to be everything to him: lover, wife, mother, collaborator and inspiration. We came to understand how this rapport completely defined each of them and allowed their creative and personal lives to flourish. Like a plant needs water, Gala told us that without the intensity of love, she was 'invisible"; a state simply unacceptable to her. The Village East Cinema, located at 181-189 Second Avenue, opened in 1926 as The Yiddish Art Theater in the heart of New York City’s Jewish Rialto district. Designed by prominent Brooklyn lawyer and Jewish community leader Louis Jaffe, the historic building was built as an elaborate, 1265 seat live theater for Yiddish theater pioneer Maurice Schwartz. The interior was designed in the Moorish Revival style that was popular in synagogues at the time, and included a forty-foot ornamental ceiling with a spectacular Star of David in the center that is still present today.
