The legend of Santa Claus and the nine reindeer by Kevin Dayhoff
The legend of Santa Claus and the nine reindeer by Kevin Dayhoff Merry Christmas.
The tradition that Santa Claus, or Father Christmas as he is known in England, traveled through the night in a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer is thought to be a Scandinavian myth.
We got the ninth reindeer, Rudolf, from the department store, Montgomery Ward. The character first appeared in a 1939 publication by Robert L. May, which was marketed by Montgomery Ward. According to many sources, including a December 25, 2013 story on "Morning Edition," on NPR, the author considered the name 'Reginald' or 'Rollo,' before settling upon the name Rudolf...

Throughout history, Westminster and Carroll County have been
filled with the spirit of the season for the Christmas holidays. No Grinches here.

I hope that by now you are putting the final touches on your
Christmas decorations and wrapping presents with some soothing heavy metal

Actually, some of my all-time Christmas favorites include
"The Chipmunk Song" sung by Alvin and the Chipmunks in 1958 and
"I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" written by John Rox and
performed by Gayla Peevey, 10 years old at the time, in 1953.

Another classic that comes to mind is a little more offbeat,
"I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" by Tommie Connor. He was only 13
years old when it was recorded in 1952. The song was actually banned by the
Catholic Church in several cities.

Visiting the P. Graham Dunn, art, gifts, home decor... store in Dalton, Ohio Nov. 25, 2016 Friday
It is a fascinating store that manufactures and sell woodworking products; much of which is of a patriotic, agricultural, arts and crafty, and religious theme.
The customers are predominantly Mennonite and some Amish - complete with horse and buggies outside. Another great bonus is that the clientele actually dresses appropriately to be out in public. And folks are respectful and polite. Just saying.
It is a really neat store. Almost like an art gallery... Perfect place to visit for someone who maintained his woodworking workshop and radial arm saw in the living room for fifteen years.

“Eye in the Sky”
I watched this taut British thriller while flying home from
Paris recently. Not only did it help me pass the time on a long flight, but I
really recommend it. Read this review by Rolling Stone writer, Peter Travers, from
March 9, 2016 http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/reviews/eye-in-the-sky-20160309
Helen Mirren and Aaron Paul debate the merits of drone
warfare in this torn-from-the-headlines drama
It's a setup for a moral debate on drone warfare. That Eye
in the Sky is nowhere near that dry and academic is a tribute to director Gavin
Hood (Tsotsi), who uses a tight script, by Guy Hibbert, to hold us in a vise
and keep squeezing. The suspense is killer as military minds in the US and the
UK come together only to lock horns on a drone operation in Nairobi.
In one corner, there's Katherine Powell (a dynamite Helen
Mirren), a British army colonel ready to order a U.S. military drone to target
a Somali terrorist organization believed to include two British citizens and
one American. Cue the complication: Alia (Aisha Takow), a young Kenyan girl is
selling bread in the kill zone.

Pericles: “What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.”
Pericles: “What you leave behind is not what is engraved in
stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.”
Attributed to Pericles, Greek Statesman born 495 BC and died
429 BC during the Peloponnesian War in the great Athens plague. According to a
number of historic accounts, “In 430 an outbreak of a plague hit Athens. The plague
ravaged the densely packed city, and in the long run, was a significant cause
of its final defeat. The plague wiped out over 30,000 citizens, sailors and
soldiers and even Pericles and his sons. Roughly one quarter of the Athenian
population died… The war was documented by Thucydides, an Athenian general, and
historian, in his work History of the Peloponnesian War. Most of the extant
