I do not recall visiting the St. Luke's Winters Lutheran Church before. I have heard great things about the church and I was excited to take advantage of opportunity to go to the fall dinner meeting of the Lutheran church men of the Westminster Conference. Especially since my pastor at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church at 21 Carroll Street in Westminster is the new Dean of the Westminster Conference...
I did a little research on the church and found that it has a nice - informative website... Hopefully I can write an article on the church in the future for the Baltimore Sun Carroll Eagle: http://www.baltimoresun.com/search/dispatcher.front?Query=Dayhoff&target=adv_article

Organization of St. Luke's (Winters) Lutheran Church
Cemetery Tombstone
Inscriptions (18th & 19th Century)
According to a church history, written by Betty Munshaur,
the church’s historian emeritus, which appears on the church website
St. Luke's (Winter's)
Lutheran Church is the fifth oldest surviving Lutheran Church in what is now
Carroll County, Maryland.
Antiquated books at
Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania state that our church
was organized as the Evangelical Lutheran (Winter's) Church in 1783. Our first
evidence of the name of St. Luke's (Winters) Lutheran Church was in the Articles
of Incorporation of March 30, 1856.
It is believed that
some of our earliest settlers in Carroll County, New Windsor (Frederick County
until 1837) worshipped in homes and groves long before St. Luke's (Winter's)
Lutheran Church was organized.
It has been recorded
that as early as 1766 George Francis Winter, who was one of the earliest
settlers near the town of New Windsor, received an application from German
colonists in Pennsylvania for land for the erection of a prospective Lutheran
church, and for land for farming purposes. It has been stated by historians
that a log church was erected in 1772.
However, the church
was not organized until 1783, eleven years later, apparently under the
direction of The Rev. Johann Daniel Schroeter. This organization was documented
in our old record book at the Gettysburg Seminary. The old register dated
1783-1884 is still intact, and is kept at the Seminary because of its
antiquity.
On March 30, 1856, our
church was incorporated under the name of St. Luke's (Winter's) Lutheran
Church. Most of the first members (communicants) of our church were German
immigrants.
The old register at
Gettysburg is in old German, as well as some of our old tombstones in the
cemetery. Both the German Reformed and Lutherans used our church at one time.
We were probably served by the same itinerant preachers as the Taneytown
charge, and we were once part of the Westminster charge.
In 1870, we were part
of the Uniontown Parish. This union lasted until 1979 (109 years). In 1979, we
decided to take on the responsibilities of our own full-time pastor.
Our present church was
built in 1875, and has been remodeled several times. The parish hall was added
in 1958.

Lou Reed, the principal singer and songwriter in the Velvet Underground, has died, his literary agent, Andrew Wylie, said on Sunday. He was 71.
Mr. Reed died on Long Island, Mr. Wylie said. He is survived by his wife, Laurie Anderson, a songwriter and a performance artist.

Lou Reed, the principal singer in the Velvet Underground, a band that had profound impact on the high-I.Q., low-virtuosity stratum of alternative and underground rock around the world, has died, his literary agent, Andrew Wylie, said on Sunday. He was 71.

Mr. Reed played the sport of alienating listeners, defending the right to contradict himself in hostile interviews, to contradict his transgressive image by idealizing sweet or old-fashioned values in word or sound, or to present intuition as blunt logic....

“Perfect Day” by Lou
Reed – with Luciano Pavarotti
“You
made me forget myself; I thought I was someone else, someone good.” Lou Reed – “Perfect Day” off the 1972
classic, “Transformer album.
(A Lou Reed
lollapalooza…)
April 3, 2008
The ever-so existential “Perfect Day” by Lou Reed is one of
my all time favorite songs.
And I’m a huge Luciano Pavarotti fan. So it blew me away when I came across this
video of Lou Reed and Luciano Pavarotti singing “It’s a perfect day” together.
What a hoot. Please
enjoy:

Okay – for the
purists…
Perfect Day
Just a perfect day,
Just a perfect day,
Drink sangria in the park,
And then later, when it gets dark,
We go home.
Just a perfect day,
Feed animals in the zoo
Then later, a movie, too,
And then home.
Oh it’s such a perfect day,
I’m glad I spent it with you.
Oh such a perfect day,
You just keep me hanging on,
You just keep me hanging on.
Just a perfect day,
Problems all left alone,
Weekenders on our own.
It’s such fun.
Just a perfect day,
You made me forget myself.
I thought I was someone else,
Someone good.
Oh it’s such a perfect day,
I’m glad I spent it with you.
Oh such a perfect day,
You just keep me hanging on,
You just keep me hanging on.
you’re going to reap just what you sow,
you’re going to reap just what you sow,
you’re going to reap just what you sow,
you’re going to reap just what you sow...
Perfect Day

It's Not Your Grandfather's Road Trip!
Looking For Redfeather; A 21st Century Novel About Three Runaway Teens in the American West.
Fiction House, Ltd. announces the publication of Looking for Redfeather, a novel by award- winning author, Linda Collison, who studied History at Metropolitan State University, worked as a registered nurse at Denver’s Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center, and raised three children in Denver.
"Fifteen-year-old Ramie Redfeather hitchhikes out of Cheyenne, looking for his father, a man he’s never met. Seventeen-year-old Chas Sweeney has taken his grandmother’s vintage Cadillac Eldorado and fled Maryland, looking for sentient life on a barren planet. Meanwhile, sixteen-year-old Faith Appleby, who has changed her name to Mae B. LaRoux and bought a fake I.D. with money she nicked out of the church collection plate, has left her home in Baton Rouge and is on a westbound Greyhound bus, guitar in hand, looking to win the break-out blues contest in Austin. The three teens meet by chance in Denver, where a good portion of the story is set, and head out on a road trip to the Austin Music Festival, looking for the elusive Redfeather on the way."

Carroll loses links to its past in Ruth Leppo and Elmer Lippy [Eagle Archives]
By Kevin Dayhoff, October 16, 2013
In the past week the Carroll County community has lost two storied and celebrated links to our past. Elmer C. Lippy, Jr., 93, of Manchester, died Oct. 13 at the Long View Nursing Home in Manchester. Ruth Ellen Leppo, 75, of Westminster, died Oct. 12 at the Carroll Lutheran Village Health Care Center.
Leppo was a substitute teacher for many years at Westminster and Elmer Wolfe Elementary Schools. Moreover she was well-known and beloved by much of the law enforcement community as the wife of the late, long-serving Westminster Police Chief, Sam Leppo, who died at the age of 53 in an off-duty automobile accident on Aug. 4, 1999.

Lippy’s long-standing tenure as an elected official was chronicled in a March 30, 1999 article in the Baltimore Sun: “Lippy has served split stints as mayor and one term as county commissioner since retiring in 1985 as a senior chemist with Lever Bros. in Baltimore. A Democrat, he served on the Town Council for two years before his election as mayor in 1987. He won his second four-year term in 1995, defeating his second cousin for the job. Lippy was a county commissioner from 1990 to 1994. He lost his bid for a second term in 1994 and ran unsuccessfully for Orphan's Court judge last fall….”

Stop and think of any great Carroll Countian that has gone on before us, and remember that history is often the sanitized and romanticized version of difficult events, in which ordinary folks stepped up to do extraordinary things. Their accomplishments are the stuff of legend, but their day-to-day struggle to make a difference was the stuff of great sacrifice.
Carroll County has been fortunate to have many native sons and daughters who made a difference in our community. Ruth Leppo and Elmer Lippy are remembered fondly as great community leaders who forged links from the past and influenced our future. I had the distinct honor and privilege of having worked with both individuals.
